14. Robert Capa. Chartres. August 18th, 1944.
Museum of Modern Art, New York.
The photograph of the shaven headed French woman, Simone Touseau, a collaborator with a half-German infant, being paraded around town after having been ritually humiliated. The man with the bag is her father, Georges, and the other bald woman, behind him, is her mother, Germaine. The male collaborators of Chartes were executed.
I have walked down this street, Rue du Cheval Blanc, between photographing the most perfect blues of the cathedrals' stained glassed windows, and finding the shop with the most perfect, and huge, coffee flavoured meringues. |
