44. Edgar Degas The Absinthe Drinker, although Google would have me believe it's called In A Café.
When I lived in Paris I visited this place, the Nouvelle Athene, at 9 Place Pigalle, just off the Boulevard de Clichy, but absinthe was no longer on their menu, otherwise I'd have had a couple. It's an entirely different Nouvelle Athene anyway, the original having been destroyed in 2004.
Degas hired a famed actress of the time, Ellen Andrée, to sit there and look totally blank and stare at her glass of la fee verte, and in the process created an image which apparently shocked Paris. I'm guessing if some photographer took a shot of Kate Moss, or some other anorexic model, publicly snorting up lines of cocaine it might cause some to be shocked.
No-one ever seems to notice the tables are missing their legs. |
