97. Kozyndan, Spirit Animal Collective.
Should have bought this on the spot when I saw it at the Outré Gallery, in Elizabeth Street, Melbourne.
But I didn't.
The internet provided blurb has it thus:
"The drawing was the culmination of Kozy's 4 year-long "Unknown Portraits" project, which involved Kozy's nearly obsessive search through old photographs in junk shops from Australia to Spain to Northern England to San Francisco to our own backyard in Venice Beach (and more!). Most of the drawings were the size of playing cards, but for the final artwork Kozy create a massive graphite rendering of a 1940's-era New Zealand primary school class photo. In it she imagined the camera to reveal the spirit animal within each of the students. This summer we decided to produce a colourized version reminiscent of old tinted photos (Dan's grandmother used to tint photos as a side job while raising her children) and this is the result."
But just leaves me wondering what my animal spirit might have been, or is, and how did the girl on the right end of the second row know hers was a pig? How did the boy on left of the front row know his was guinea pig? And I'd like to congratulate the water buffalo, second row, centre, for perhaps actually being a water buffalo.
While according to some on-line quiz my spirit animal turns out to be the owl, with this explanation:
"The owl spirit animal is emblematic of a deep connection with wisdom and intuitive knowledge. If you have the owl as totem or power animal, you’re likely to have the ability to see what’s usually hidden to most. When the spirit of this animal guides you, you can see the true reality, beyond illusion and deceit. The owl also offers for those who have it a personal totem the inspiration and guidance necessary to deeply explore the unknown and the magic of life."
Obviously, the girl in the second row and third from the right, intuitively explores the unknown as well.
Whoot!
